A Napoleonic Pose
Regal quarter-plate French daguerreotype of a gentleman in a Napoleonic pose. Staring directly at the camera, he wears a very stylish, formal, double-breasted suit with a simple tie. We are curious to know if he is actually standing or just sitting tall in the chair to create a more dominating pose. The daguerreotypist’s chair is noticeable behind him on the right. On the left, the sitter’s leg is slightly bent as if possibly resting it on a footstool. If you look closely, they’ve created an interesting and unusual pose. The plate is in very good condition with nice tones and contrast. There is a wider band of perimeter tarnish as seen. While the back of the image had been opened in the past, the plate still had four smaller old paper seals on the sides to hold it in place. We have since cleaned the glass and resealed the plate.
